Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Also Know As Mark Twain, Was Born In 1835 An
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, additionally know as Mark Twain, was conceived in 1835 and passed on in 1910. He is most popular as an American humorist and for his sensible perspective on America in the nineteenth century through his books and different stories. He had the entire world enthralled through his master composing and talks. ?I never let my tutoring meddle with my training (home.eathlink.net/?/twain.html),? Imprint Twain once said. Imprint Twain was an extraordinary motivation to America in the nineteenth century is as yet a motivation to contemporary essayists today. Imprint Twain was conceived as Samuel Langhorne Clemens in the humble community of Florida, Missouri. He lived in a little, two-room house, and being the fourth of five youngsters, it was clearly packed in their home (Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1). In 1839, at four years old, he and his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri which is found legitimately contiguous the Mississippi River (World Book 530). Here is the place Twain grew up as a kid. This was the place his motivation of most his books originated from. He saw things that would later make him the incredible creator as we probably am aware him today. Without this period in his life, an immense lump of scholarly history would be absent from America. By living on the banks of the Mississippi River, he encountered numerous awesome things like brilliant steamships going down the stream, some would simply cruise by, while many would stop and trade freight. These steamers would bring an assortment of individuals including entertainers, artists, speculators, double crossers, slave vendors, and an extraordinary variety of different voyagers (World Book 530). Things came fine in Twain's life until he was twelve. At that age, in 1847, his dad passed on. True to form, he was stunned to lose his dad at such a youthful age and it was then that his conventional long stretches of learning were finished. To fund-raise he started to fill in as a p rinter's student. Like most nineteenth century writers, he was set up for his prospective profession by working with a typesetter and perusing a ton in his extra time (www.robinsonresearch.com/?/twain.html). In 1851, he started helping his more seasoned sibling, Orion, in the creation of a paper, the Hannibal Journal. This is the place Twain started to genuinely compose and where he previously distributed his composition. He added to the paper his sonnets, reports, productions, and even entertaining portrayals for quite a long while (World Book 530). This, additional to his instruction from working in print shops, perusing different books, and working with a typesetter, was extremely valuable for helping Mark Twain become the incomparable American writer that he is viewed as today. For an amazing duration, Twain had seen the steamers drive all over the Mississippi River past his town and this made the longing in him to need to figure out how to drive a steamship and get his pilot's permit. In 1853, Twain left his old neighborhood in Hannibal with his longing to figure out how to drive a steamer as a primary concern. While out traveling to New Orleans, he persuaded the steamer pilot to show him how to drive and by the spring of 1859, Mark Twain was an authorized steamship pilot (www2.lucidcafe.com/?/twain.html). In 1861, with the episode of the Civil War, Twain and his sibling, Orion, moved to Carson City, Nevada to escape from the war. He and his sibling attempted to make it rich by digging for gold and silver. In the wake of flopping in this undertaking to get rich, he moved to Virginia City, Nevada to join the staff of a paper. There, in 1863, Samuel Langhorne Clemens originally composed under his nom de plume, Mark Twain, which is a call utilized by Mississippi boatmen meaning ?two spans?. In 1865 Mark Twain composed his first well known story titled ?The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County? (www2.lucidcafe.com/?/twain.html). In 1870, he wedded his better half, Olivia Langdon. She counseled Twain on his composition and changed his distortions in his works. Now and again she debilitated his accounts while, at different occasions, really making them significantly increasingly intelligible (Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1). ?Since the time father and mamma were hitched, dad has composed his books and afterward taken them to mamma in composition and she has expurgated them? Animal Farm Book, Language Used as an Instrument of Social...
Paying particular attention to the character of Squealer, how is language used as an instrument of social control? How do the pigs rewrite history? In the book animal farm, Orwell very carefully created his characters in order to mimic certain political figures of the time. In this case Squealer functioned as the propaganda department. Squealer uses language to keep Napoleon in power. He uses language as a means to consolidate power, in this light truth is an element that can be manipulated through language. His use of language is designed to enhance the control that the pigs have over the rest of the farm. When squealer uses language as his weapon he constantly puts particular spins on events and conditions and he uses slogans andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This, together with Boxerââ¬â¢s enormous strength, is what makes him a threat to the pigs; they desperately need him for his enormous capacity for work and example but, if that strength were to be turned against them because he unwittingly alerted the rest of the animals to their corruption, then their regime would be finished. This fact is why Boxer is viewed as a treat, despite being an ally napoleon ultimately took the first chance he had to get rid of boxer, and why his eventual fate comes about. Napoleon took full advantage of the disposal of Boxer and knew once he was gone the threat of Napoleon being over thrown was banished, Because even if the animals tried to revolt or protest, he would be able to take control with his almighty army of beast like dogs. While the betrayal of Boxer is not, the true climax, one could indeed construe this event in such a way that it legitimizes as an alternative climax. After all, the betrayal of Boxer is nearly equal in the importance to the banishment of Snowball, politically speaking. Of all of the Characters in Animal Farm, are there any who seem to represent the point of view of the author? Piagets Cognitive Theory Essay Example For Students
Piagets Cognitive Theory Essay Soraya S. Psychology Piagets Cognitive TheoryCognitive development is the development of thought processes, including remembering, problem solving, and decision-making, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. Historically, the cognitive development of children has been studied in a variety of ways. The oldest is through intelligence tests. An example of this is the Stanford Binet Intelligence Quotient test. IQ scoring is based on the concept of mental age, according to which the scores of a child of average intelligence match his or her age. IQ tests are widely used in the United States, but they have been criticized for defining intelligence too narrowly. In contrast to the emphasis placed on a childs natural abilities by intelligence testing, learning theory grew out of work by behaviorist researchers such as John Broadus Watson and B.F. Skinner, who argued that children are completely malleable. Learning theory focuses on the role of environmental factors in shaping the intelligenc e of children, especially on a childs ability to learn by having certain behaviors rewarded and others discouraged. During the 1920s, a biologist named Jean Piaget proposed a theory of cognitive development of children. He caused a new revolution in thinking about how thinking develops. In 1984, Piaget observed that children understand concepts and reason differently at different stages. Piaget stated childrens cognitive strategies, which are used to solve problems, reflect an interaction between the childs current developmental stage and experience in the world. Piaget was originally trained in areas of biology and philosophy and considered himself a kinetic epistemologist. He was mainly interested in the biological influences on how we come to know. He believed that what distinguishes human beings from other animals is our ability to do abstract symbolic reasoning. Piagets theory, first published in 1952, grew out of decades of extensive observation of children, including his own, in their natural environments as opposed to the laboratory experiments of the behaviorists. Although Piaget was interested in how children reacted to their environment, he proposed knowledge as composed of schemas, basic units of knowledge used to organize past experiences and serve as a basis for understanding new ones. Schemas are continually being modified by two complementary processes that Piaget termed assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation refers to the process by taking in new information by incorporating it into an existing schema. Not everything ca n be assimilated into existing schemas, though, and the process of accommodation must be used. In accommodation, existing schemas are modified or new schemas are created to process new information. According to Piaget, cognitive development involves an ongoing attempt to achieve a balance between assimilation and accommodation that he termed equilibration. He formulated a theory that systematically describes and explains how intellect develops. The basis of his theory is the principle that cognitive development occurs in a series of four distinct stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operations, and formal operations. In the first, or sensorimotor, stage (birth to two years), knowledge is gained primarily through sensory impressions and motor activity. Through these two modes of learning, experienced both separately and in combination, infants gradually learn to control their own bodies and objects in the external world. Toward the end of Piagets career, he brought about the idea that action is actually the primary source of knowledge and that perception and language are more secondary roles. He claimed that action is not random, but has organization, as well as logic. Infants from birth to four months however, are incapable of thought and are unable to differentiate themselves from others or from the environment. To infants, objects only exist when they are insight therefore objects that are out of sight are out of mind. These infants are limited to motor reflexes, but gradually build on these reflexes to develop mote sophisticated procedures learns to generalize their activities to a wider range of situations. They learn to respond to and manipulate objects and to use them in goal-directed activity. The ultimate task for a child at this stage is to develop object permanence, which is the realization that objects and people continue to exist even when they are out of sight. This accomplishment marks the end of the sensorimotor stage. From ages two to seven years, children are in Piagets third stage, the preoperational stage. This is a period of rapid development in language. Intelligence is demonstrated through the use of symbols and memory and imagination are developed. At this stage, thinking is still restricted. Egocentrism is predominant and they feel that everyone sees, thinks, and feels the same way they do. Children also show animistic thinking at this stage, believing that inanimate objects have feelings. A concept that is not reached yet at this age is conservation; they are not aware that a given quantity of matter remains the same if it is rearranged or changed i n its appearance. Two restrictions in their thinking are centration and reversibility. Centration is the tendency to focus on only one dimension of a stimulus and ignore the other dimensions. Reversibility, which they have not yet developed, is the realization that after any change in its shape, position, or order, matter can be returned to its original state. Preoperational children also have difficulty categorizing similar objects together. .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 , .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .postImageUrl , .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 , .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78:hover , .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78:visited , .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78:active { border:0!important; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78:active , .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78 .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue07272489c8cb1256251df73c8702c78:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Issue Of College Tuition EssayFrom ages 7 to 11 or 12 years, children go through the concrete operations stage. In this stage, children drift away from egocentric thinking and come to realize that people have different thoughts and feelings different from theirs. Furthermore, they can understand situations from the viewpoints of others. Intelligence is characterized by number, length, liquid, mass, weight, area, and volume. They can perform logical operations in relation to concrete external objects. They can now decipher their thinking, or focus on more than one dimension of a stimulus at a single time. They cannot solve abstract or hypothetical problems, however. Piagets fourth and final stage, the formal operations stage, takes place from 11 or 12 to 18 and beyond. In early adolescent years, the development of the ability to reversibility and conservation to abstract, verbal, and hypothetical situations takes place. They also begin to make speculations about what might happen in the future. Adolescents are also capable of formulating and testing hypotheses, and dealing with abstract concepts like probability, ratio, and proportion. In this stage start the perception of analogies and the use of complex language forms such as metaphors and sarcasm. Teenagers can comprehend philosophy and politics and formulate theories of their own. Abstract concepts and moral values become as important as concrete objects. The smoothie industry Essay Example
The smoothie industry Paper The smoothie industry has and is still experiencing exponential growth. This case analysis will delve into the industry by observing its external and internal environment. Utilizing Griffins Model as a guideline; eco-environment, economic, technological, political/legal, social/cultural, international dimensions and its task environment will be closely analyzed. A. External Environment: I. Eco-Environment: Since the smoothie industry relies heavily on fresh fruit and juices for its ingredients, the eco-environment definitely has an important role. The climate can either limit or help the industry thrive depending on the fruit(s). Fruits such as oranges thrive during summer season and strawberries flourish in the winter season. The seasons not only affect the ingredients that go into the smoothies but also affect the amount of people drinking the smoothies. According to Bill Winter, One of the risks in juice bars is seasonalityjuice bar sales plateau when the weather cools (Business Review Weekly, Australia 2001). General Environment: A. Economic Dimension: The market for smoothies has grown by more than 30 per cent each year since the mid-1990s (Ehlrich). Juice Smoothie Association (JASA) predicted back in 2001 juice bar sales would surpass $1 billion. Dan Titus, director of Juice Gallery Multimedia and JASA, also adds, We have been following the juice/smoothie segment for several years now and predict that 2002 will continue to exhibit positive growth and revenue picture (Business Wire, 2001). B. Technological Dimension: Astute Solutions , a leading provider of eCRM solutions, created the software program Power Center(tm) for management use in multi-channel customer contacts. PowerCenter is a powerful consumer response and tracking system that integrates multiple channels of communication and multiple customer databases (Business Wire, 2002). Incentive Systems is another technology that provides spreadsheet system. Nina McIntyre, vice president of worldwide marketing at Incentive Systems, says Potentially its data stream from point-of-sales systems, from cash registers systems, wherever [users] capture the transactions that are being measured. We can integrate with those software packages, the data flow into our incentive management system, and then we calculate the incentive payments (Managing Customer Service, 2001). Technological research studies have indicated that isoflavones (found in soy) may actually prevent the growth of estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells as r eported in March 2000 issue of the Journal Cancer Research (The Desert News). C. Political/Legal Dimension: Smoothie industry must follow regulations. Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) regulation is that foods must have to have at least 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving and must also meet other criteria in being low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium (The Desert News). Regulations enforced by OSHA also have salient stimuli to the industry. Federal and State regulations are also salient, regulations such as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Time Off to Vote, Federal Family and Medical Leave Act and California Labor Code. D. Social/Cultural Dimension: Smoothies have become an alternative in Americans health conscience. In recent past years, they have been conscientious about their fat-in-take. Smoothies provide a healthy indulgence packed with fruity flavors and nutrients that comply with societys taste and health conscience. Good health is the principle factor behind smoothie producers growing interest in soy bases for their products (Dairy Field). According to Liz Zamites, marketing manager of brand development for cold beverages, Baskin-Robbins USA, Glendale, Calif., The experience of watching a smoothie being made reinforces the perception that you are using quality ingredients, that its not full of preservatives and that there are actually fresh fruit in there. E. International Dimension: In Great Britain, diluted products masquerading as smoothies are capitalizing on the lack of product definition (PR Newswire, 2001). This is because British Soft Drinks Association does not recognize smoothies as its own category. Manufacturers are labeling drinking products smoothie just because they have fruit in them. III. Task Environment: A. Competitors: The smoothie industrys main competitors are; Fantasia Fruit Juice Company- its juices have herbal and vitamin supplements such as vitamin C and St. Johns wort (thought to have calming effect), reported to have been said by Barnhorn, their mission is to nourish the Midwest community we grew up in. Planet Smoothie-127 locations in 21 states and plans to open 30 more locations in the New Orleans area, Smoothie King- operates in vitamins and nutritional supplements retail, has 276 locations and was founded more than 30 years ago, annual sales of $60 million (Ronette King). ZiA Juice Co.- lower-cost alternative to Jamba Juice(Nations Restaurant News), ZiA has taken pride in providing Customerization and LifeSTYLING for its customers, ZiAs menu consist of signature fruit smoothies with supplements such as Siberian ginseng and soy protein, along with frozen coffee-blended beverages and freshly made fruit and vegetable juices (Nations Restaurant News). VIP Smoothies- although a newly developed company, has already developed a plan of attack on selected markets with product national initial distribution with FSI coupons and billboard and radio advertising (Frozen Food Age). Other notable competitors are Juice it Up and Juice Stop, they too have a share in dominating the market (Business Review Weekly- Australia). Freshens Smoothie Company- it is an Atlanta based company and has 500 stores in operation, which is becoming the nations fastest growing smoothie chain. Freshens has collaborated with MET-Rx and developed a full line of nutritional boost-ers especially designed for Freshens (Dairy Field). B. Customers: Dairy Field reports, Bucking the trend toward fatty on-the-go refreshments, todays consumers are reportedly slurping down smoothies with increasing frequency. A typical smoothie drinker has been narrowed down to ages between 18 to 34 with a higher household income, and is more likely to be female (Zamites). A survey conducted by AC Nielsen showed that, The intent to purchase was over 70 percent Among households with children under 18, it was over 80 per cent. What they found astounding from this survey was that almost half of those surveyed were not regular smoothie drinkers. The other half of the percentage drinks at least one smoothie a week. C. Suppliers: Whole Foods- has been identified as being the worlds largest retailer of natural and organic foods. According to Angi McMurray they feature foods free of artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, and synthetic preservatives, and unbleached grains and grain products. Southwest Traders- a firm based in Temecula provides and delivers fresh fruits and vegetables such as oranges, lemons, carrots, celery, etc. It also supplies napkins and cups. Southwest is one of the nations largest suppliers to ice cream and yogurt shops and juice bars as reported in The Business Press/California. D. Regulators: Food and Drug Administration (FDA)- regulates the labeling of foods. As reported in The Desert News, in year 2000, the FDA allowed the soybean industry to say that 25 grams of soy protein eaten daily, in conjunction with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. This salient because since then soy protein has been in high demand and the smoothie industry quickly capitalized on this. For the average diet of 2000 calories a day, the World Health Organization, USDA and other leading authorities recommend that 55-60% of calories come from carbs, 10-20% from proteins, and 20-30% from fats. Plus, studies show that diets low in sodium, containing a good source of potassium, may reduce the risk of stroke and high blood pressure!(www.jambajuice.com) Occupational Safety Health Administration- oversees the well-being of employees and customers. Strict regulations are enforced constantly by OSHA inspectors. They make often visits to store sites unexpectedly. E. Strategic Allies: One known strategic ally is Amazon Advertising. Jamba Juice has teamed up with Amazon Advertising to handle branding and some advertising (ADWEEK).

Why You Shouldnt Mix Bleach With Ammonia
Why You Shouldn't Mix Bleach With Ammonia The chemical reactions involved in mixing bleach and ammonia produce extremely dangerous toxic vapors. Thus, its important to understand some first aid advice in case youre accidentally exposed to a bleach and ammonia mixture. Noxious Fumes and Poisonous Reactions The primary toxic chemical formed by this reaction is chloramine vapor, which has the potential to form hydrazine. Chloramines are a group of related compounds well-known to be respiratory irritants. In addition to respiratory irritation, hydrazine can also cause edema, headache, nausea, and seizures. Mixing bleach and ammonia also produces chlorine gas, which has been used as a chemical weapon. Two common ways to accidentally mix these chemicals include: Mixing cleaning products (generally a bad idea)Using chlorine bleach to disinfect water that contains organic matter (i.e., pond water) Chemicals Produced Note that each of these chemicals but water and salt is toxic: NH3 ammoniaHCl hydrochloric acidNaOCl sodium hypochlorite (bleach)Cl chlorineCl2 chlorine gasNH2Cl chloramineN2H4 hydrazineNaCl sodium chloride or saltH2O water Likely Chemical Reactions Bleach decomposes to form hydrochloric acid, which reacts with ammonia to form toxic chloramine fumes. First, hydrochloric acid forms. NaOCl ââ â NaOH HOCl HOCl ââ â HCl O Next, the ammonia and chlorine gas react to form chloramine, which is released as a vapor. NaOCl 2HCl ââ â Cl2 NaCl H2O 2NH3 Cl2 ââ â 2NH2Cl If ammonia is present in excess (which it may or may not be, depending on your mixture), toxic and potentially explosive liquid hydrazine may form. While impure hydrazine tends not to explode, it does have the potential to boil and spray hot, chemically toxic liquid. 2NH3 NaOCl ââ â N2H4 NaCl H2O First Aid When Exposed If you become exposed to fumes from mixing bleach and ammonia, immediately remove yourself from the area to fresh air and seek emergency medical attention. While the vapors may attack your eyes and mucous membranes, the biggest threat derives from inhaling the gases. Get away from the site where the chemicals were mixed. You cant call for help if you are overwhelmed by the fumes.Call 911 for emergency help. If you feel that 911 is unwarranted, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for advice on handling the effects of exposure and chemical cleanup. If you find someone unconscious who you believe is suffering from inhalation of bleach/ammonia compound, try to remove the person to fresh air, preferably outdoors. Call 911 for emergency assistance. Do not hang up until instructed to do so.Seek proper cleanup and disposal instructions from Poison Control. Such a mistake is most likely to be made in a bathroom or kitchen, so thoroughly ventilate the area before returning to dispose of the compound and start cleanup.

A Midsummer Night's Dream Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
A Midsummer Night's Dream - Research Paper Example According to Stephen Greenblatt, ââ¬Å"This is a world in which outward appearance is everything and nothing, in which individuation is at once sharply etched and continually blurred, in which the victims of fate are haunted by the ghosts of the possible, in which everything is simultaneously as it must be and as it need not have beenâ⬠(60). Many of these often confusing issues became the subjects of the major literature produced during this era such as in William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream. Although the exact date of when Shakespeare wrote this play is unknown, with most estimates suggesting it was perhaps around 1595 or 1596, the confusion between tradition and contemporary times is highlighted within this play through Shakespeare's deliberate use of a play within the play. One of the most effective means of reinforcing the major concepts of a storyââ¬â¢s plot or of highlighting individual character traits is to include some form of repetit ion within the text. Shakespeare was a master at this kind of repetition as is seen in many of his plays including Hamlet and Midsummer Night's Dream. However, he uses these forms of repetition for entirely different purposes. In Hamlet, the play within the play is used to both show the audience actions that took place prior to the play's opening as well as to expose the guilty conscience of the king and thus prove to Hamlet that vengeance is justified. In Midsummer Night's Dream, though, the play is used to link tradition to present day in such a way as to demonstrate that despite the perception that times are changing drastically, unsettling many in their comfortable traditional views, human activity and emotion really hasn't changed all that much. To accomplish this seemingly impossible feat, Shakespeare incorporates an entire mini-play within the greater work. This mini-play appears in Act 5 and its action functions to almost duplicate the principle characters and actions found within the larger work. Not only does it reiterate some of the key points of the major work, but this mini-play also functioned to directly address an element of the audience that might otherwise have felt omitted. In Shakespeare's time, everyone attended the plays as a major form of entertainment, but the uneducated lower elements of society didn't always fully understand the high comedy offered by the playwright. By providing this mini-play, even these elements of the audience were able to enjoy the play and understand its message. Thus it is possible to examine this mini-play in order to gain greater appreciation and understanding of the larger play. Within its simple one-scene setting, this mini-play serves to expose the exaggerated romanticism of the lovers, the timeless struggle of young people attempting to marry for love despite the wishes of their parents and the sometimes disastrous problems that can only occur in the confusing darkness of night. Although many of Shakespea reââ¬â¢s plays can be traced to earlier stories as a means of linking them with tradition, this particular play has fewer historical connections. According to Mabillard, Geoffrey Chaucerââ¬â¢s story of the Knightââ¬â¢s Tale in his Canterbury Tales is one probable source for the play - both the master play and the mini-play. The Knight's Tale is told from the

Assessment of Pain in Post Surgical Patients Essay
Assessment of Pain in Post Surgical Patients - Essay Example The research paper ââ¬Å"Assessment of Pain in Post Surgical Patientsâ⬠focuses on a subjective and objective assessment of pain in post-surgical patients of cardiothoracic surgery. Pain management includes the various types of pain experiences throughout an individualââ¬â¢s life cycle and alleviating the same through interventional measures. Pain experiences may include acute and chronic in nature. Pain has physiological, spiritual, emotional and psychosocial dimensions, it is for this reason managing pain through multidimensional observations, and assessments are extremely important. Due to the various advances in the field of pain management (including assessment tools, newer guidelines on pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions), nurses may land up into incomplete or inadequate domain knowledge leading to ineffective pain management. These include the failure to identify types of pain (neuropathic or nociceptive or psychopathic?), how it will be assessed ob jectively and subjectively? If the type of pain is screened properly, it will create a roadmap to treat the pain in a patient whether with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (for nociceptive pain) or drugs that reduce neuropathic or psychopathic pain like Pregabalin or Sertraline respectively. With these observations it will help to design a proper care because if the patient is suffering from neuropathic pain NSAIDs will be ineffective and if the patient has a more nociceptive component , then neuropathic drugs like Pregabalin will not mediate cure. Materials and Methodology A total of 75 patients will be evaluated as per the current admission beds in the CTVS ward. Both male and female patients would be evaluated. Inclusion Criteria Patients undergone CTVS surgery in past 7 days Patients expressing some sort of pain. Exclusion criteria Patients without pain. Patients with chronic diabetes mellitus Patients having pain from fall, arthritis, fibromyalgia, spondylosis, disc prolla pse, chronic low back pain prior to CTVS surgery. The reason for the exclusion criteria is that we wanted to find whether the sole component of CTVS surgery causes post operative pain in patients. The variables were due to the fact that diabetes, fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, disc prollapse can all have a neuropathic component of pain and will interfere with our findings whether CTVS surgery is the cause of neuropathic pain. The assessment tool that will be used is based on Dr Freynhagenââ¬â¢s Pain Detect Tool which comprises of a set of questions that gives each component of observation a individual score.( Freynhagen et al, 2009). The scores are assigned a weighted point of +1, -1,0, or +2. For example, if a patient complains of a pain that is radiating to both his hands from the point of origin ( heart in this case), a +2 is assigned in that criterion score. The final score of all the criteria are summated and put on an assessment scale to determine the objective compon ent of pain as given below in the format below: Results evaluation The summated pain score is placed in a pain scale given in the attached appendix (A) from a 0 to 38 point scale. If the score of the patient is 0-12 a neuropathic component is unlikely and it can be inferred the patient has chiefly nociceptive pain component, if the total score is 13 to 19 then the pain has both nociceptive and neuropathic compo

From Romantic to Victorian Essay -- essays research papers
From Romantic to Victorian à à à à à The Victorian Age came after the Romantic Age and took place between the years of 1832 and 1901. Throughout the Romantic Age many authors/poets concentrated and focused on the rights of the people, as well as the idea of individualism. We are going to see how those beliefs helped spring into the Victorian Age. There are three main things concerning the Victorians during this specific time period: evolution, industrialism, and women. Along with these three comes doubt. These changes were confusing to many and began to make them wonder if what they had believed in all these years wasnââ¬â¢t true after all. à à à à à The evolution doubt came into effect when two men began to question nature and disturb the originality of the way things are suppose to be. These two men were Marx and Darwin. Although Marx isnââ¬â¢t mentioned as much as Darwin, we know that he was a very radical person who began to question the economic injustice of things, as well as the class system. Darwin on the other hand, was questioning the Bible and how things got to be the way they are. He brought about the idea of ââ¬Å"natural selectionâ⬠and that lead to biblical/religious doubts in people. Before Darwin came out with his idea on natural selection and evolution, scientists had exhibited doubt when the Neanderthal skeletons were discovered. This was the beginning of religious doubt. It wasnââ¬â¢t until Darwin came out with his explanation that people really began to take into consideration...

Aim In Life Essay
I always feel that one needs to know where one is going in life so that when one reaches the place he can move beyond the horizon set for him. That is why it is essential for every person to have some aim in life. This aim gives people the strength to face obstacles and move the barriers in path to success. Almost every successful human being in history had a dream, which became the driving force that took them to the pinnacle of success. The aims of these people were to make the dream a reality. Henry Fordââ¬â¢ s aim was to make the motor car within the reach of the common people and today Ford is one of the biggest car manufacturers in the whole world. In Bangladesh, Dr. Yunusââ¬â¢s aim to bring credit facility to the poorest people in the country saw the birth of now world famous Grameen Bank I also have an aim in life. My aim is to own a business organization that-opens up opportunities to young people of the country. Helping them to get established in their own ventures with the right support by training them, helping them obtain capital and any other support they may need. I will try to encourage people to become entrepreneurs and such an organization will go a long way in encouraging people to take up the path of business. To fulfill my aim I want to get a degree in business administration as I feel this will equip me with the right attitude and knowledge. Then I intend to work in different reputed organizations to orient myself with the structure and workings of companies. I feel that, with the right education and work experience along with the right type of network. I will one day be able to reach my aim in life and then maybe go beyond that towards an even broader horizon.

Edgar Allan Poe Essay - 1575 Words
Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was a bizarre and often scary writer. People throughout history have often wondered why his writings were so fantastically different and unusual. They were not the result of a diseased mind, as some think. Rather they came from a tense and miserable life. Edgar Allan Poe was not a happy man. He was a victim of fate from the moment he was born to his death only forty years later. He died alone and unappreciated. It is quite obvious that his life affected his writings in a great way. In order to understand why, the historical background of Poe must be known. Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. His parents were touring actors and both died before he was three years old. Afterâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦So, he did what most people do. He found a way to escape. His method was writing. He found so much in common with his characters, that his life began to emulate theirs. Although it is probably the other way around. How tragic that the one thing that he was good at never seemed to do him any good. No matter what he wrote, he just kept sinking further and further into an abyss. This abyss could be called death or ultimate despair. When we read Poes stories, we often find ourselves wondering how such a mind could function in society. This quotation from American Writers: A Collection of Literary Biographies, very accurately describes the landscape of Poes stories: The world of Poes tales is a nightmarish universe. You cross wasted lands, silent, forsaken landscapes where both life and waters stagnate. Here and there you catch sight of lugubrious feudal buildings suggestive of horrible and mysterious happenings......The inside of these sinister buildings is just as disquieting as the outside. Everything is dark there, from the ebony furniture to the oaken ceiling. The walls are hung with heavy tapestries to which mysterious drafts constantly give a hideous and uneasy animation. Peoples Charter of 1838: In 1837, six Members of Parliament and six working men, including William Lovett, (from the London Working Mens Association, set up in 1836) formed a committee, which then published the Peoples Charter in 1838. This stipulated the six main aims of the movement as:[1] 1. A vote for every man twenty-one years of age, of sound mind, and not undergoing punishment for crime. 2. The secret ballot. To protect the elector in the exercise of his vote. 3. No property qualification for members of Parliament thus enabling the constituencies to return the man of their choice, be the rich or poor. 4. Payment of members, thus enabling an honest tradesman, working man, or other person, to serve a constituency, when taken from his business to attend to the interests of the Country. 5. Equal Constituencies, securing the same amount of representation for the same number of electors, instead of allowing small constituencies to swamp the votes of large ones. Annual parliaments, thus presenting the most effectual check to bribery and intimidation, since though a constituency might be bought once in seven years (even with the ballot), no purse could buy a constituency (under a system of universal suffrage) in each ensuing twelve-month; and since members, when elected for a year only, would not be able to defy and betray their constituents as now. The Chartists obtained one and a quarter million signatures and presented the Charter to the House of Commons in 1839, where it was rejected by a vote of 235 to 46. Parliament, by a large majority, voted not even to hear the petitioners. Many of the leaders of the movement, having threatened to call a general strike, were arrested. When demonstrators marched on the prison at Newport, Monmouthshire, demanding the release of their leaders, troops opened fire, killing 24 and wounding 40 more. The leaders of the movement: John Frost, Henry Vincent and Samuel Holberry. 1842: Chartisms biggest petition and the General Strike 1842 was the year in which more energy was hurled against the authorities than in any other of the 19th century. [4] In early May, 1842, a further petition, of over three million signatures, was submitted, which was yet again rejected by Parliament. The depression of 1841ââ¬â1842 led to a wave of strikes in which Chartist activists were in the forefront, and demands for the charter were included alongside economic demands. Workers went on strike in 14 English and 8 Scottish counties. Several Chartist leaders, including Feargus OConnor, George Julian Harney, and Thomas Cooper were arrested, along with nearly 1,500 others. The 1848 petition On 10 April 1848, a new Chartist Convention organised a mass meeting on Kennington Common, which would form a procession to present another petition to Parliament. The original plan of the Chartists, if the petition was ignored, was to create a separate national assembly and press the Queen to dissolve parliament until the charter was introduced into law. However the Chartists were plagued with indecision and the national assembly eventually dissolved itself, claiming lack of support. But it was the end of the movement. And finally Iââ¬â¢d like to remark that the apparent failure of Chartism as a political movement in the mid-19th century proved to be temporary. Five of the six points in the Charter were adopted by 1918.

The Scariest Place IVe Ever Been Essay Example
The Scariest Place IVe Ever Been Essay The Scariest Place Ive Ever Been The scariest place Ive ever been was Stewartsville Cemetery, located outside of Maxton, N. C. The night we decided to go was Friday 13th. My wife and I invited friends and family over to watch horror movies. While watching the movies we began to get pumped up and ready for a night out filled with fun and adventure, not realizing what I was getting myself into. We left home around 12:30 that morning, when we arrived at the cemetery I was hesitant about getting out of my vehicle, because this was my first time ever doing anything like this. The graveyard seemed to have at least three hundred graves, they were seperated by an old iron fence. As we all got out of our vehicles and began to walk through the graveyard the fog had began covering the burial grounds as if it was a blanket. We started walking trying to find the oldest grave, but it was so dark that I barely could see my own hands in front of my face. I could only see the solar lights which families had put on their relatives grave. Instead, everyone came up with a great idea to play hide and go seek. In one area of the graveyard, the graves were dated back to the late 1700s and in another area the graves were most recent, and the ground was still soft. We decided to see who could find the oldest grave and eventually I did, dating back to the year 1801. After we arrived back at our house and everyone went home my wife took a shower and layed down for the night. As for me, I was restless and scared to close my eyes. The thoughts of the graveyard and spirits horrified me. I felt like I had done something really wrong and that the spirits were waiting to haunt me. That was the longest night ever, and I was so thankful to see daylight. In conclusion, I have to say that Stewartsville Cemetery was the most scariest place I had ever been. It has all the right characteristics for a haunted graveyard, and the graves there are old and spooky. Not to mention a place down the road called Gravity Hill, which is also known for it hauntings.

Rational Choice Theory essays
Rational Choice Theory essays Since the end of WWII a new and controversial theory has arisen in the political science world, the Rational Choice theory. This method concerns itself more precisely with explanation and analysis rather then the traditional descriptive and judgmental method of looking at political phenomenon. As shown in the article It isnt Rocket Science, but... The rational choice scholar concerns itself more with the method by which an individual goes about making a decision when faced with different alternatives. However, along with the emergence of this new theory, oppositions to it have also emerged. In the article When did Political Science forget about politics the actual reliability of this theory is challenged. Therefore, one must ask itself, is it possible to develop a universal scientific theory that could apply to all political areas? Can Political Science be viewed as a science? These are the questions that these articles are centered around. As mentioned above, the first article focuses more on the actual methods employed by an individual when faced with more then one possibility or outcome. It looks at what an individuals preferences regarding a final outcome are and the beliefs that guide the individual in accessing which tool he should use to achieve their desired outcome. In an utterly simple way, it considers a person exclusively in terms of the things he or she wants and the things he or she believes. We want to get a feel for how a person makes choices when confronted with alternatives. Since political behavior is often about making choices our model will provide us with hunches and intuitions about how a generic or representative individual confronts these circumstances in the abstract (1). To take it a step further, the rational choicer believes that all humans are rational beings. That is, they use their preferences and beliefs to come about making decisions in their everyda...

Diabetes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Diabetes - Essay Example e discovered numerous advantages for the diabetes patient in maintaining a stable exercise routine as well as the most beneficial degree of physical involvement and frequency of physical activity, but each of these realizations could have an impact on best practices for physical therapists in working with diabetic patients. In ââ¬Å"Metallothionein-Mediated Antioxidant Defense System and Its Response to Exercise Training Are Impaired in Human Type 2 Diabetesâ⬠(Scheede-Bergdahl 2005), the authors discuss the importance of metallothioneins I and II (MT 1) as part of the antioxidant defense system and its relationship to exercise in the diabetic patient. Previous studies regarding these antioxidants have indicated that exercise has only beneficial effects on the production of MT 1, but the research team noticed that none of the studies had actually been conducted on people with Type 2 Diabetes. Further evidence had suggested the possibility that these important chemicals are reduced with exercise in persons with Type II Diabetes. During the study, it was confirmed that levels of MT 1 are increased in the skeletal muscle tissue and plasma of healthy individuals who have participated in a regular exercise program. Participants who had Type 2 Diabetes showed no corresponding increases thou gh. While the study was careful to note that there were no increases or decreases in MT 1 levels in the skeletal musculature in these patients, it was also noted that levels were decreased somewhat in the plasma levels. Decreased MT 1 can lead to oxidative stress, which ââ¬Å"contributes to the development and acceleration of related conditions such as nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy and macro- and microvascular damageâ⬠(Scheede-Bergdahl 2005). At the same time, tissue samples taken from patients with Type 2 Diabetes indicated increased oxidative stress from the control group with tissue appearing more susceptible to damage. As further research is conducted as to
